Line Follower Robot without Microcontroller

In this instructable, I will teach you how to make a line following robot without using Arduino. I will use very easy steps to explain. This robot will use IR Proximity Sensor to follow the line. You will not need any kind of programming experience to build this robot. Only, some interest could make it...

Step 1: Parts Needed

Parts needed:-

  • Chassis(including wheels and motors)

  • IR Proximity Sensors(pair)

  • Jumper wires

  • Breadboard(for connections)

  • L293D IC(motor driver)

You can understand how proximity sensor works:- How Proximity Sensor works?

Step 2: Assemble the Chassis

You can buy any chassis(or even make your own). Most of the chassis come with an instruction manual. So build your chassis according to that. Attach wires to the motor pins and keep ready. Also, attach sensors(pointing down)to the body and also stick the breadboard on the chassis(shown above).

Solder wires to the motors and move on to the next step!

Step 3: Attach L293D to the Breadboard

Attach the L293D on the breadboard as shown in the diagram. Make sure that both of the sets of legs of the IC must be on different sides of the breadboard or else they may get connected. If you are new to a breadboard, check this out:- How does breadboard work?

Step 4: Main Connections

Now make the final connections by referring to the diagram above. If you have any queries in the diagram, please comment.

Step 5: The Run

Now, it's time for testing our robot. Make a black line on any white surface and test it out. Note:- The line must be at least 5-6 cm thick or else the robot will cross the line and won't be able to follow it.
